Ball Position: How to Get it Right Every Time

What is ball position? Why is it important?

The ball position refers to the position of the golf ball relative to the player’s feet, in relation to the address position. The address position is the place from where a player holds the golf driver and prepares to hit the ball.

The ball position is important because it will determine your swing, stance and more importantly how the ball runs.

The most common ball position used by all professionals and amateurs is the “Open Ball Position” or also called as “High Ball Position.”

In this style, you have your ball placed far behind you. This will allow you to swing your driver freely and helps you address the ball using a lower position.

Once you start using the Open Ball Position, the accuracy of your technique becomes less of an issue.You can simply use any stance and grip that you’re comfortable with.

Another benefit of having the ball in a high position is that you can enhance and improve your swing. Having the ball in the high position means that you have to have a slightly different swing to strike the ball.

A high ball position means that your body has to be positioned lower and needs to swing down more in order to hit the ball.

So by using this type of ball position, you can improve your swing and your overall game. Your swing will be more free-flowing and relaxed.

How to Consistently Nail Ball Position?

Very few people get it right in the first few attempts. Like many aspects of the game, your swing dynamics are too complex to figure it out right away. That’s why I recommend repeating the same thing over and over again. You should spend a few days hitting good shots with a poor ball position.

Once you are comfortable and you have the mechanics down, it’s time to try and nudge the ball.

You can try moving the ball forward a little bit. Make sure you stop hitting the ball as soon as you can. Remember, you’re not trying to go for home runs every time.

Repeat the test to see if your contact has improved.

Unfortunately, this test will not work on lessons. That’s because it’s impossible to hit the ball and not notice whether you hit it well or not. While you can finish your swing, the ball will either go forward or not. And by then, it’s too late to get feedback.

With lessons, you can’t tell if the ball started left or right, or just 15 feet in front of the hole. You can, however, be sure of how you hit the ball if you have the picture in front of you.

Drills to Improve Your Ball Position

If you hold the ball too far out in your stance, you won’t be able to create sufficient spin nor can you put adequate weight into the impact. You’ll also be more prone to hitting fat or thin shots. When most players think about contact point, they picture a straight line that runs from their toes up through their hips, waist, shoulder, and finally ending up at the bottom-center of the back of their opposite wrist. This is a common method for teaching proper contact point. It’s a good start, but you don’t necessarily need to contact the ball in the center of the bottom of your opposite wrist every time. In fact, on some shots it’s better to contact the ball closer to the base of the palm of the opposite hand.

When you’re hitting a low shot, you want your contact point to be at the base of the palm of the opposite hand … just like you’re making a “stop sign” with your hand. This contact point will help you produce more topspin, effectively stopping the ball and keeping it low to the ground.

String Drill

The position of the ball in your stance affects how you play the game, and there is no single right position for every player? Golfers tend to move the ball in their stance back and forth eventually ending up with two or three different ball positions.

Most players tend to move it to the rear of your stance because it is thought it helps “square the face.” This can be very true for the most part and many players have perfected this theory.

However you can be just as successful by moving the ball out in front of your back foot. The main reason for moving the ball forward is to release the club at a different angle; much like pitching in baseball.

By moving the ball forward you can release the club with the face angled more toward the target. While I like to place the ball out in front of my heel, I often move the ball backward about 4 to 6 inches off the heel of the back foot.

One of the reasons a lot of golfers don’t play well with the ball out in front of their back foot is because of the fear of hitting the ball fat.

While it is true that you will be prone to hitting the ball fat more often, you will also have a softer landing which will cover a lot of mis-hits.

Basketball serves as a great workout. It’s more fun and less exhausting than running. It has a shorter time commitment, sets the teamwork and skill building tone for practices, and gives me the thrill of slam-dunking the ball my dream to play professionally didn’t pan out.
