My Recommendation: How to Increase Club Head Speed

If you are a good ball striker, the chances are that you already don’t have a problem with your ball speed. You already know how easy it is to increase your club head speed and live with the results.

But if you are struggling with ball speed, then you can try this drill I learned a lot of years ago. It is called the Circuit Drill Exercise.

This drill will work your whole body but especially your upper and lower body muscle groups. When you go from one power phase to the next, you are squeezing your muscles tight while using your core strength to keep your body balanced. You then relax your muscles and shift your weight to the front while concentrating on activating your hips and thighs as you push downward towards the ground.

During this movement, your arms and clubs should be in line with your shoulders and hips.

You can push harder and harder until you feel that you cannot hold on any longer. Then rest until your muscles feel almost recovered and repeat the movement.

I recommend that you do this drill after your range warm up. You should be able to complete five to eight repetitions of this drill on each side before you finish your range session.

The Circuit Drill is also great in improving your flexibility and balance.

You have to have a good degree of flexibility and balance in order to execute this drill flawlessly.

The Bottom Line

A golfer’s ability to swing faster may be the single biggest factor separating the weekend hacker from the weekend pro—and the weekend pro from the Tour player. The truth is, the slower the swing speed, the better your game.

Think about it: the faster a swing, the more difficult it becomes to control. Not to mention that it takes a great deal of force to generate clubhead speed in the first place, which you’re asking your body to develop the rehab, put in the hours, and develop the strength to hit shots with speed and control.

But if you’re not driving the ball 300 yards, you can’t keep up with the PGA’s longest hitters. Is it the length of the course holding you back? Do you always go OB in a matter of a few holes? Are you hacking it out of the rough because you’re not hitting it straight?
